Play .wav files through your PC speaker
Chances are that if your computer is sophisticated enough to read this Web page, it probably has a sound card. However, if you have occasion to work with PCs that aren't blessed with digital sound abilities, and wish to play .wav files through the internal speaker, your choices have usually been limited to Microsoft's speaker driver or dead silence. However, the MS speaker driver can only handle .wav files with a maximum sampling rate of 22K in 8-bit mono. RaPMusik is a free DOS utility that uses a graphical, black-and-white, mouse-driven interface to let you play both 8-bit and 16-bit stereo .wav files of any length and sampling frequency through your PC's internal speaker, or through your Soundblaster or Covox card. According to the author, it should work on all systems from the 10MHz XT to the state-of-the-art Pentiums. To us, playing .wav files through our PC's speaker sounds someone humming through wax paper and a comb, but it you're desperate enough, it'll do in a pinch. Reviewed on Sep 15 1998.
